Studio Program in Sculpture

About Our Studio Program in Sculpture

The Sculpture Program provides cohorts with the opportunity to develop their artistic practice within a supportive and critically engaged environment. Emphasizing a wide range of perspectives, the program encourages diverse approaches to making—no single method or set of tools is prioritized—fostering a dynamic and experimental atmosphere that reflects the realities artists face beyond academia.

Cohorts investigate diverse concepts, mediums, and methods reflective of a 21st-century contemporary art practice. Participation in individual and group critiques and discussions with faculty, guest artists, and peers rigorously engages the philosophical, critical, and technical means of art making.

Why Our Sculpture Program is Different from Other Organizations

Cohorts attending our studio program in sculpture are given individual studio spaces to support independent work, alongside shared areas designed for group critique and discussion. The program is housed at 36 Edgewood, which includes a woodworking shop, metal shop, and computer lab. We also have a metal-casting and ceramic facilities, these additional resources are accessible the artists during their program at the IAL.

At the heart of the program is a commitment to dialogue and constructive critique. IAL Cohorts and the faculty engages in ongoing conversations that contextualize each artist’s work within their personal development, art history, and contemporary practice. These discussions take place through one-on-one meetings, small group sessions, and full-department critiques, creating a vibrant, collaborative learning environment.
